Ground Reviews
"Surpisingly nice!"
Went to Ashton Gate on 18th February 2008 for a televised game between Bristol City and Crystal Palace. I have to say that i was really imressed with the place and have to rank it in my top 3 grounds in the Championship. It's an old fashioned ground with loads of character, clean and tidy and very well organized.

We parked up at the Dovecote pub about a 10 minute walk from the ground which let in away fans, it was very quiet, had excellent food and very friendly Bristol City fans in there. £2.50 a pint of Carling and £2.30 for John Smiths so pretty reasonable prices. (See parking section for more info on how to get there)

Outside the ground is all fanced off from the outside world, once in there there are burger vans, toilets and loads of space to walk about, although we didn't, I'm assuming you can walk around the entire ground. It's not completely pedestrianised and there are a few directors cars and players cars in a small parking area just by the away entrance.

The away fans concourse is very basic with one food counter that takes 4 queues of people and one drinks only van that only has one queue. Unfortunately there was no beer available, a bottle of coke was £1.80 and they wouldn't let you have the lid, a Balti Pie was £3.00 which is a little bit steep but you can tell where the extra money has gone when you bite in to it, the heating bill! THE hottest pie I have ever had at a match but still pretty good. Toilets in the concourse are again very basic but are a lot better than some of the places in the league. Be warned that the entire concourse is open air so if it is raining and you want a pie you may have to get wet!

Away fans are sat in the corner of the Micra Wedlock Stand which is the oldest looking stand behind one of the goals. Seating isn't very steep so everyone stands (or we did anyway) this means that if you are at the back of the stand you'll spend the entire game on tip toes ducking and weaving to try and get a view of what is going on. This was the only real down point to the stadium. The terrace is literally that, a terrace with some seats that have no back to them bolted to the ground. If your team score, be careful not to venture too far forward from where you are standing as the seats don't have backs to them if you nudge into one of them you'll find they fold down so there is nothing to support your weight which means you'll fall forwards and probably end up on your backside!

You can get some excellent noise going at Ashton Gate, the roof isn't particularly low but the acoustics are pretty darn good and when you have every away fan singing it does sound very impressive. The game ended 1-1 after the ref decided he was going to keep playing until Bristol City scored which they eventually did 5 minutes into stoppage time. Any malicious banter from either side was forgotten about outside the ground and there was no trouble at all. Little bit congested walking off the premises but other than that no problems at all.

Back in the car we hit quite a bit of traffic getting out of Bristol but there was so much to talk about from the match that I didn't really take note on how long we were stuck in it for it must have taken us about 45 minutes to get out of Bristol. In conclusion though, it is a really nice little ground and I'd recommend every football fan checks it out.

Parking
Parking at The Dovecote Pub
There is parking out the front and round the side of the Dovecote Pub about a ten minute walk from the ground. To get to the Dovecote follow the A370 past Ashton Gate Football Stadium on your left. Exit the A370 onto the B3128, follow the road back round under the A370 and take the next very sharp right on the corner as the B3128 bends left, you are now in Ashton Road. The Dovecoat is just up Ashton Road on the left.

To walk to the ground turn left out of the pub and walk up to the dual carriageway (A370). Cross over the carriageway and continue walking straight. Walk down the slip road (carefull as traffic is coming towards you). Follow the slip road to the end and immediately cross over the road into "Bower Ashton Terrace". Continue straight and you see the entrance to the ground on the right hand side.

Rail And Tube
Bristol Temple Meads Railway station is about a 2 miles from the ground. The closest station to the ground is Parson Street but very few trains stop there, make sure you check with the list of destinations otherwise you could end up with a long walk.
